FAQ

Questions, answered

What to expect from the consultation, how the systems differ, and where we work. Anything not here is a good question for the visit.

The consultation

Is the in-home consultation free?

Yes. A Window Fashion Atelier designer visits your home, measures every window, brings fabric and system samples, and prepares a written proposal. There is no charge and no obligation.

What happens during the consultation?

We look at each room, the light it gets through the day, and how you use it. We measure every opening, show fabrics and systems against your actual windows, and talk through privacy, glare, blackout, and motorization. You receive a proposal afterward.

How do I book a consultation?

Use the consultation form on this site or the contact page. Tell us what you are dressing, where the home is, and roughly how many windows, and we will reach out to schedule a visit.

Do I need to know what I want before the visit?

No. Most clients start with a problem, too much glare, no privacy, a bedroom that will not go dark, rather than a product. Choosing the right system is the point of the consultation.

Drapery and shades

What window treatments does Window Fashion Atelier make?

Custom drapery, including ripple-fold, pinch-pleat, and sheer; roller and solar shades; Roman shades; and motorized systems for all of them. Every piece is made to measure for a specific window.

What is the difference between solar shades and blackout shades?

Solar shades are woven to cut glare and heat while keeping the view. Blackout shades block light entirely and suit bedrooms and media rooms. Many rooms layer both, or pair a solar shade with drapery.

What does openness factor mean for solar shades?

Openness factor is the percentage of the weave that lets light through. A lower openness blocks more glare and gives more daytime privacy; a higher openness keeps more of the view. The right choice depends on the window’s exposure.

What is ripple-fold drapery?

Ripple-fold is a drapery style that hangs in soft, even S-shaped waves on a ceiling or wall track. It stacks tightly when open, which suits modern interiors and floor-to-ceiling glass.

Are Roman shades or roller shades better?

Roller shades are clean and minimal and disappear when raised, which suits modern rooms and large glass. Roman shades fold up in soft layers of fabric and add warmth and texture. Many homes use rollers for function and Romans or drapery for the rooms where softness matters.

Can you layer drapery and shades on the same window?

Yes. A common pairing is a solar or blackout shade mounted close to the glass with drapery in front, giving glare control by day, full dark at night, and the softness of fabric.

Can you fit unusual windows, like arches, angles, or skylights?

Yes. Specialty shapes, angled gable glass, and hard-to-reach clerestory windows can be dressed with custom-shaped and motorized systems. We confirm feasibility for each opening during the consultation.

Motorization and smart home

Can motorized shades connect to my smart home system?

Yes. We specify motors that work with Lutron, Control4, Savant, Crestron, and common voice assistants, in battery, low-voltage, or hardwired versions depending on the house.

Can you motorize shades in an existing home without opening walls?

Usually. Rechargeable battery motors and plug-in low-voltage options motorize most windows with no new wiring. During a renovation, hardwired motors can be coordinated with your electrician.

Can motorized shades run on a schedule?

Yes. Motorized systems can lower and raise on timers or sun-tracking schedules, for example closing on west-facing glass in the afternoon and opening at dusk, and can be grouped by room or by facade.

Do you work with home automation integrators?

Yes. On new construction and renovations we coordinate with your integrator and builder early, ideally before drywall, so wiring and recessed pockets are planned in.

Projects and process

How does a project work from start to finish?

Consultation and measuring, a written proposal, fabrication to those measurements, then installation, where we fit, tune, and program everything. The atelier handles every step in-house rather than handing off to a separate installer.

How much do custom window treatments cost?

It depends on the number and size of windows, the system, fabric, and whether it is motorized. Every project is quoted after measuring so the price reflects your actual windows rather than an estimate.

How long does it take?

Timing depends on the systems and fabrics chosen. Your proposal includes a schedule, and we plan installation around your move-in, renovation, or construction timeline.

Do you work with interior designers, architects, and builders?

Yes. We work directly with homeowners and as a trade partner to interior designers, architects, and builders, from specification through installation.

Can you handle co-op and condo building requirements?

Yes. We provide certificates of insurance to managing agents, book freight elevators, and schedule installation within building work hours, which is routine in Manhattan and Brooklyn buildings.

Do you work on new construction?

Yes. On new builds we can plan recessed shade pockets, ceiling tracks, and motor wiring with the builder so treatments disappear into the architecture.

All five boroughs of New York City, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, and North and Central New Jersey, including Bergen, Essex, Morris, Somerset, Monmouth, Hunterdon, and Union counties.

Yes. Those towns are within our New Jersey service area, along with Englewood Cliffs, Tenafly, Franklin Lakes, Montclair, Summit, Mendham, Bernardsville, Far Hills, Colts Neck, and surrounding towns.

Do you work in the Hamptons?

Yes, we have completed projects in the Hamptons. Ask about your location when you book and we will confirm.

Care

How do I clean custom drapery and shades?

Light vacuuming with a soft brush attachment or a gentle dusting keeps most fabrics clean. Specific care depends on the fabric; we leave care guidance for what is installed in your home.

What fabrics hold up to strong sun?

Solution-dyed and UV-stable fabrics resist fading, which matters on south- and west-facing glass and in waterfront homes. We show these options at the consultation.
